Lower cholesterol
The controlled trial found that the intervention group experienced a 36 mg/dL (22%) reduction in LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol and a 37 mg/dL (15%) reduction in total cholesterol. This result was statistically significant compared to the control group. The RYR formula currently under investigation is shown to effectively lower cholesterol and LDL cholesterol in this study population. For patients intolerant to statins or who object to lipid-lowering medications, RYR (red yeast rice) therapy may be an attractive and relatively well-studied alternative.
According to research by the NCEP group, in patients with hyperlipidemia whose condition did not improve during a one-month dietary therapy period, repeated intake of processed foods containing red yeast rice at 1g/day significantly helped reduce total cholesterol and LDL cholesterol levels by approximately 10%. European clinical trial reports also show that consuming red yeast rice containing 3-10mg of monacolin K can significantly improve hypercholesterolemia.
